How Much Does It Cost to Design an App in 2026? Per Screen

For 20 screens: $17.9k-$51.1k with a US agency, $3k-$35.8k with a freelancer, $730-$8.8k for AI plus designer polish, or $0-$40 with AI.

For a 20-screen, one-platform MVP, budget $17,900-$51,100 for a US agency, $3,000-$35,800 for a freelancer, $730-$8,800 for an AI draft plus designer polish, or $0-$40 for an AI-only draft. Choose an agency when you need research and one accountable team, a freelancer when the scope is clear, and AI first when you need to inspect the full product before committing thousands.

The important detail is that 20 screens usually means about 60 design frames once states are included.

The short answer: app design cost by route

These estimates use public rates from Upwork, Clutch and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. AI prices come from vendor pricing pages. All work-hour and calendar-time estimates are author assumptions.

Caption: Illustrative model, not a quote. Rates from Clutch's 2026 UX pricing guide and Upwork; hours are our assumptions, shown in the tables below.

Hourly rates explain part of the spread. Scope explains the rest. Quotes change when you add screens, another platform, user research, usability testing or brand identity.

What counts as a screen, and what are you really paying for?

A screen is a distinct app view, such as login, home, item detail or settings.

A state is a situational version of that screen. Common states include empty, loading, error, success and populated.

A frame is one screen in one state on one platform. Our model uses 20 screens x about 3 states, or about 60 frames. Designing separate mobile platforms can expand that to about 120 frames.

Start by turning your app idea into user flows and a list of screens. Then create a screen x state matrix so quotes cover the same deliverables.

Diagram showing 20 screens multiplied by 3 states each to make 60 frames, then by 2 platforms to make 120 frames, with our model's hours: 4-7 hours per screen from scratch, 0.5-1 hour per extra state, plus 15-20 percent for two revision rounds

Caption: How a screen list turns into frames. The hour figures are the assumptions used in the cost model below.

What drives app design cost?

Screen count sets the base workload. Each distinct screen needs wireframing and high-fidelity design.

States can roughly triple the frame count. If empty, error and loading cases are missing, developers must make those decisions or return with questions. Use the empty, error and loading state checklist before requesting quotes.

Platforms also multiply the work. iOS plus Android, or mobile plus web, can double the number of frames when each platform needs a distinct treatment.

Research and testing sit outside many screen-based quotes. Clutch lists usability testing, user research and UX strategy as separate services.

Revision rounds can touch every frame. Upwork warns against "leaving too many of the variables undefined." Put the included round count in the contract.

Brand identity is outside this base model. Budget separately if you need a logo, visual identity or broader brand system.

UI/UX design rates in 2026

Upwork publishes worldwide median ranges based on "typical hourly rate ranges of certain historical contracts worldwide." UI designers are $20-$40 per hour, while UX designers are $25-$39.

Its sample rates for intermediate US specialists are $30-$125 for interface layout and design, $40-$90 for visual design, and $35-$105 for interaction design.

Clutch's UX Services Pricing Guide 2026, updated September 21, 2026, uses data "from first-party reviews submitted by verified UX clients." It reports typical reviewed UX/UI projects at $10,000-$49,999, an average project cost of $84,973.08, a typical timeline of 10 months and an average monthly cost of $8,895.10. Those figures cover whole UX engagements, not just MVP screens.

Agency rates are $100-$149 per hour in the United States, Canada and Australia; $50-$99 in the United Kingdom, Poland and Spain; and $25-$49 in India, the Philippines, Ukraine and Mexico.

For an employee comparison, BLS reports a $104,000 median annual wage for web and digital interface designers in May 2025, or about $50 per hour. Private-industry wages and salaries represented 70.0% of employer compensation costs in June 2026. That produces an estimated loaded cost of about $148,600 per year, or $71 per hour.

Per-screen cost model and arithmetic

These hours are author estimates, not published benchmarks. Replace them with hours from your own quote.

The model assumes a 20-screen mobile MVP, one platform, about three states per screen, 40 extra states, 60 total frames, a mid-level Figma designer, two revision rounds, no research and no brand identity.

The US agency low estimate falls inside Clutch's typical $10,000-$49,999 project band, while the high estimate slightly exceeds it. The employee comparison only makes sense when you have enough ongoing work to justify annual employment.

What each route buys you

Agency

An agency can cover discovery, every agreed screen and state, two review rounds, a clickable prototype and Figma handoff.

The modeled cost is $17,900-$51,100 in the US or $4,500-$16,800 in India, the Philippines, Ukraine or Mexico. The estimate assumes 179-343 hours.

Allow 4-10 weeks. Production takes an assumed 3-6 weeks with two designers contributing about 30 hours each per week. Kickoff, workshops and feedback add another 1-4 weeks.

Choose this route when you need research, brand capacity, project management and one accountable team.

Freelancer

One designer owns the project. The modeled cost is $2,980-$11,440 at Upwork's median UI rates, rising to $35,750 at the top of its intermediate US range.

Allow 4-12 weeks. At 35 billable hours per week, 149 hours takes about four weeks. At 25 hours per week, 286 hours takes about 11 weeks.

Use a fixed price tied to an agreed screen list. Write states and revision rounds into the scope. This route fits a clear spec and a preference for one person's judgment and craft.

AI tool only

Budget $0-$40 and one or two days of your time. This route fits early validation, investor-pitch mockups and reviewing the whole product before committing thousands.

For a practical workflow, see how to make your app look professional for an investor pitch.

AI draft plus designer polish

Here, AI creates the spec, screens and states. A designer then checks flows, refines important frames, cleans components and prepares the handoff.

Using Mowgli for the AI draft

Mowgli turns a product idea into a full multi-screen app design: it writes the spec first, then designs every screen. You can export to Figma for a designer, export React + Tailwind, or hand the work to Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another coding agent.

We make Mowgli.

It is free to start (300 credits); credit packs from $12; plans from $15/mo. Mowgli designs and prototypes; to host and ship, you hand off to a builder or coding agent (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Lovable).

You can start from an idea with App screens, turn a document into a design with PRD to designs, or follow the PRD to wireframes walkthrough.

Measured wireframe example

A 300-word PRD for an invoice-approval tool produced 10 wireframe screens and 40 states in about 13 minutes. The project, questionnaire, spec and wireframes used about 240 credits.

That fits within the free 300 credits. At the $12 pack rate, it represents about $11.52, or about $1.15 per screen.

The AI portion costs $29-$40 through either one $40 pack with 2,000 credits or one Pro month at $29 with 3,000 credits.

A separate full app run produced 23 screens, 77 states, theme previews, one chat edit and a clickable prototype. It used about 1,200 credits and took about 40 minutes.

Designer polish budget

Assume 35-70 hours: 4-8 for flow and spec review, 20-40 for refining 60 frames, 6-12 for Figma component cleanup, 3-6 for one revision round, and 2-4 for handoff notes.

At Upwork's $20-$40 median, labor costs $700-$2,800. At $30-$125 for intermediate US work, it costs $1,050-$8,750.

Combined with the AI portion, the total is $729-$8,790, or $36-$440 per screen. Allow 1-3 weeks at 25-35 hours per week. Research, usability testing and brand identity remain excluded.

Hidden app-design costs

One extra revision round can add an assumed 9-23 hours, or $280-$2,850 at $30-$125 per hour. Define the included revision count in writing.

States discovered during development also create expense. Missing empty, loading and error states force implementation decisions or new designer questions.

Handoff may include specifications, developer Q&A, tool seats and a Figma Professional Full seat at $16 per month. Use this handoff guide for Claude Code, Cursor or Codex to define responsibilities.

A second platform can double frames for human-designed scope. Adapting designs for a different platform is a one-time 75-credit action in Mowgli.

Treat research, usability testing and branding as separate budget lines on every route.

Which route should you choose?

Start with an AI draft if you need to inspect the entire product before spending thousands. Budget $0-$40, then add polish only when the draft needs production-level refinement.

Choose an agency if you are funded, require research or branding, and want one accountable organization. Budget from $18,000 at US rates or $4,500 offshore, plus separate research costs.

Choose a freelancer when you have a clear spec and want one person to own the UI. Request a fixed price based on a screen-and-state inventory.

Use AI alone when you are pitching or validating an idea. The investor-pitch mockup guide shows how to focus the work.

Hire in-house when design is an ongoing workload, not a one-off project. Compare expected freelance spend with the estimated $148,600 annual loaded cost.

If you already have a Lovable, Bolt or Cursor app, treat the work as a redesign. Follow the guide to redesign a vibe-coded app without rebuilding it.

Verdict

A US agency is the best fit for research plus one accountable team. Budget $17,900-$51,100.

A freelancer is the best fit for defined scope and individual ownership. Budget $3,000-$35,800.

An AI-first process is the best fit for seeing every screen and state before larger spending. A Mowgli draft costs $0-$40. Add a 35-70-hour designer polish pass for a combined total of $730-$8,800. See Mowgli pricing for the credit model.
